Scripture must be the foundation for the function of the Spiritual Disciplines. The form of the disciplines may change though. Prayer is the function but how you pray (kneeling, walking, laying prostrate) is the format and that may change from person to persona and experience to experience.
Here are the Scriptures which we are memorizing as part of our spiritual journey. We have chosen to focus on one Scripture and memorize it, pray it, and meditate on it. Too often the focus is on the quantity of Scripture rather than the goal of having that Scripture permeate every aspect of your life.
Week 1: Matthew 16:26 (NIV) What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
Week 2: Psalm 119:105 (NIV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
Week 3: Psalm 77:12 (NIV) I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds
Week 4: Colossians 4:2 (NIV) Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Week 5: Luke 5:16 (NIV) But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Week 6: James 5:16 (NIV) Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
Week 7: Matthew 11:28 (NIV) Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Week 8: John 6:68-69 (NIV) Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
Week 9: John 10:10 (NIV) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
